Fabrication of Upper Extremity Orthosis

Abstract
The term orthoses refers to a device that is applied externally to the body to support or improve the function of that body segment. Upper limb orthoses can provide the essential therapeutic means of maintaining a position and holding body segment both statically and dynamically. Upper limb orthoses are a combination of engineering and science and the creativeness of the orthotist whose in-depth knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology is applied in the design and construction of custom-fabricated orthosis. The orthotist, therefore, must utilize the principles of biomechanics, combined with a thorough knowledge of hand anatomy, when fabricating orthosis for patients with hand injuries. The role of the certified orthotist usually is to recommend, design, fabricate, fit, and follow up on definitive upper limb orthoses that are constructed from durable metal and plastic alloys. Upper limb orthoses are more often accepted by patients when a well-defined therapeutic program is in place and the orthoses provide a desired function that cannot be accomplished in any other fashion.
